In the Foundations of Art & Design course students will experience a multi-pronged approach to the study of visual communication. Our focus is the language of seeing . In this course students consider the aesthetics of world cultures and the role of visual communication therein. Additionally, students will be required to draw a lot . Much like reading, everyone can draw. Most of us build this capacity to communicate visually, with guidance and ongoing practice. Someone once said, “learning to draw is teaching yourself how to see.” It’s through this practice that students become more conscious of their own capabilities as visual thinkers - honing their ability to read, interpret, and to express ideas visually. Initial review of basic elements of art and principles of design inherent in the world around us - in this course students will experiment with a variety of materials and methods. Each of these is an opportunity to convey not only what they see and how they see it (uniquely), but also to build a creative confidence that will serve them well in all aspects of life.
