SCHOLASTIC ART & WRITING AWARDS - 2018 Call for Submissions
Be Seen! Be Heard! Be Original!
"Get your sketchbooks, notepads, easels, and pens ready because it’s almost time to enter your masterpiece for the opportunity to receive recognition, exhibition, publication, and scholarships! With 29 categories of art and writing, there’s a place for whatever you create. From paintings to poetry, comic art to critical essay, the Scholastic Awards have many opportunities for you to share your vision and have your voice heard.
Last year we received more than 320,000 submissions from talented students across the country and provided access to more than $10 million in scholarships. Since 1923, the Scholastic Awards have recognized the exceptional vision of our nation’s talented teens.
So what are you waiting for? Join the ranks of alumni like Sylvia Plath, Andy Warhol, Lena Dunham, Robert Redford, Ken Burns, Kay WalkingStick, Zac Posen, Paul Chan, and many more. On September 14, you can start your submission process!"

. . . at the METROPOLITAN MUSEUM OF ART - Thinking about life beyond high school?
On Friday, November 14 from 4:30-6:30, the Metropolitan will be hosting their next "Career Labs." Explore careers in the arts, hear from Museum professionals and experts, and build your skills in special workshops. Attend six or more sessions and receive a certificate of participation.

Portfolio Review Day at Montclair Art Museum, Montclair NJ
Saturday, October 3, 12-4pm
FREE, and no reservations required.
MAM Portfolio Reviews allow college-bound students to receive feedback on their visual art portfolios from college art school admission officers. Over 25 schools will be on site and available to meet with students. Please bring 12 to 20 pieces of original work including sketchpads if available. You may bring work in any medium including clothing, jewelry, and sculpture if you can carry it. If you wish your digital work to be viewed, bring your own laptop as well as an additional battery.

Join us to explore İnci Eviner’s short film Runaway Girls and her use of drawing as it takes on new dimensions as actor, action, and freedom.
At the crossroads of drawing and performance, İnci Eviner's Runaway Girls uses repetitive, hypnotically shifting scenes to explore contemporary feminism in Turkish culture. After viewing the film, we will trace multiple life-size silhouettes and draw masks to create two puppet-like images of self/other - - our silhouette and an interchangeable face.

On Saturday, September 20 from 2:00-4:30pm, the Guggenheim will be hosting a unique Tour and Workshop for students in grades 9-12 called “Finding Your Place.” Related to the current exhibition Under the Same Sun: Art from Latin America Today , this workshop will explore the idea of how artists are influenced by place in their work. Students will spend time viewing the exhibition and making artwork with teaching artist Antonia Perez. Tickets are offered at a heavily discounted rate of $10 per participant thanks to support from UBS.

The Scholastic Art & Writing Awards has an impressive legacy dating back to 1923. Over the years, the Awards have grown to become the longest-running, most prestigious recognition program for creative teens in the U.S., and the nation’s largest source of scholarships for creative young artists and writers. A noteworthy roster of past winners includes Andy Warhol, Sylvia Plath, Truman Capote, Richard Avedon, Robert Redford, Joyce Carol Oates, Stephen King, John Updike, and many more.
Each year, the Alliance partners with more than 100 visual and literary-arts organizations across the country to bring The Awards to local communities. Teens in grades 7 through 12 can apply in 28 categories of art and writing for the chance to earn scholarships and have their works exhibited or published. Submissions are juried by luminaries in the visual and literary arts, some of whom are past award recipients. Panelists look for works that best exemplify originality, technical skill and the emergence of a personal voice or vision.
In the last five years alone, students submitted nearly 900,000 original works of art and writing. During that period, more than 60 top arts institutes and colleges have partnered with the Awards to make $40 million in scholarships and financial aid available to regional and national Scholastic Award winners.
